Needless to say, nowadays Academic institutions rely heavily on information for academic, research and support services. And with the rapidly growing interconnectivity of information systems, which pose a major of vulnerabilities to malicious attacks to these systems. Therefore, academic institutions face a multitude concerns about the security of computing resources and information at the same time ensuring the availability and confidentiality of information and network systems.

Is your Wireless (WLAN) secure?

* I just finished my first Computer Security course today (Sunday 29) and I really enjoyed this class.

Nowadays, wireless networking products are inexpensive and almost anyone can setup a wireless access with less than $80.00 or even cheaper for equipments. Indeed, wireless network is very convenient but beware that there are a dozen of potentials network vulnerabilities in your home WLAN.

Here are a couple tips that can help you protect your WLAN:

Don’t use the default setup that comes with equipments
Change the default administrator password and username on your Wireless router (If you don’t know how, then read….read the user manual)
Turn on WPA on your Access Point
Use MAC to control access
Turn Off your Wireless Access point while not in use

Besides that, don’t use FREE wireless access in your neighborhoods as you never know who your good neighbor is :)

Time Management - Do you know how to manage your money?

If you know how to manage your money, then you shouldn’t have any problem with managing your time.

For example, you just received a pay check from work with the amount of $500.00 and here the list of items that you could spend your money for:

Shopping for clothes $50.00
Pay Car insurance bill $100
Buy an iPod video (cool stuff) $200.00
Pay Electricity bill $50.00
Buy foods for family $100.00
Pay for Childcare $100.00
Pay for Gas $50.00
Must buy an iPhone :)

Are you going to spend $200.00 for an iPod Video or shopping for clothes while your children need foods and bills need to be paid? No, you would not do that. However, you would of course spend all your money for what important first.

Isn’t that the same concept? If you answer yes then, you can apply this concept to prioritize your tasks that helps you to manage your time more efficient.

Who stole my time?

I used to ask this question over time and never get the correct answer for this question until recently. The truth is no one stole my time; it is just because I did not know how to manage my time effectively.

Again, if you don’t know how to manage your time then, one day.... you will ask this question to yourself: Who stole my life?

Time Management - Important Vs Urgent

If you have a choice each day in the tasks that you face, which do you choose between doing what is urgent and doing what is important?

The truth is, I still find myself fall into this trap and can never seem to get the time to do the things that I should do. Yes, everything is important and urgent but should you do the urgent things first before doing the important things? I used to believe that successful people doing urgent things first and I was wrong; only people doing the important things first are the one that get ahead in their life.

Here are my rules to do my daily tasks and I will try to stick with these for the rest of my life:

Do things that are important and urgent first
Second, do things that are important but not urgent
Lastly, do the urgent things but not that important

It sounds silly but sometime you’ll need to put off at least some of the things that are urgent to get an important thing done.

The Role of People in Technology

Believe it or not that all systems, applications, high-tech products were created for people not the other way around. A lot people misunderstood that advanced technologies will soon take over our workplaces which then lead to increase in unemployment in our society. Yet, there are many systems and software programs are designed to reduce labor costs, improve product quality, or streamline respective processes but these systems/programs still rely on effective management (people with skills) for maintenances or upgrades. Thus, the most critical task is how to find employees who committed to and knowledgeable about their roles and committing to an organization goals.

I am a graduate from Northeastern University. I graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) in Information Technology. I have a very good experience with a variety of programming languages as well as experience in web programming, systems administration, and database design. I’ve been working in IT field for over seven years and currently I am working in the IT Dept. at Cambridge College.

I am currently enrolled in the Master of Management with concentration in Information Security program at Cambridge College. How secure is our security?

Last week I read an article about the security breach on June 8, 2007 at the University of Virginia where hackers gained access to 5,735 records of faculty members. (http://www.virginia.edu/uvatoday/newsRelease.php?id=2217) After learning this incident, I was wondering if CC is capable to detect such security breach.

In deed, through out the year, CC transfers a large amount of sensitive information through admissions and employment processes and the question is how secure is our security?

I guess I’ve got an idea for my ILP perhaps?

Time Management Seminar

First of all, I'd like to thank Prof. Seo for giving us (ProSem 07) an opportunity to learn these new TM techniques :)

Secondly, I think the seminar was very helpful for myself as I am still trying to balance my time for work, school and family so that I can accomplish my goals. I also do believe that people who use these techniques effectively are the highest achievers in life, from personal, business to community service.
